PPE Committee

The PPE committee is made up of 18 members who meet regularly to make decisions on important issues for the PPE society. This includes planning the PPE holiday, organising socials, discussing fundraising techniques, and this year has included creating a brand new PPE society website.

Sophie Lonergan - President

As President of the PPE Society, I am responsible for the general organisation of the society. This involves chairing committee meetings, liaising between staff and students and overseeing the operations of the society. This year the society will have the most members to date and therefore we have loads of new things planned. More socials, increased corporate sponsorship, larger career events, a PPE holiday and big fundraising initiatives are all on the agenda. Make sure you get involved!

Billy Lange Hewlett - Vice President

Welcome to the Manchester PPE society! I am the current Vice President and my role mainly focuses on sponsorships (along with the treasurers), merchandise and alumni relations. By alumni relations I mean the maintenance and improvement of the connection between the PPE society and graduated PPE students. With regards to merchandise, I am currently in the process of designing new and improved PPE hoodies, which will hopefully be available at the start of the new term. I am also responsible for helping Sophie with the general running of the society. I look forward to meeting you in September!

James Kyne - Secretary

Hello! I am the PPE Society’s secretary which involves scheduling and organising all of our committee meetings, making sure everyone gets on with their roles and generally helping out wherever I can. For the past two years I have been involved with running the society’s social events and I am sure you will see how great of an opportunity they are this year. I am going into my thirds and final year. Coming to Manchester and studying PPE have been fantastic experiences and I urge you to make the most of it. Come to the socials, keep in touch with second and third years and get stuck in wherever you can. If you think you want to be on the committee, feel free to ask me about the roles and how to apply next year. Have a great year!

Tom Rudkin & Sam Sayer - Treasurer

Our role as treasurer is to ensure the financial wellbeing of the society. This includes securing sponsorship and budgeting for socials. It is our job to make sure we have enough money to allow the committee to put all their plans into action. The society has broken tradition this year to allow co-treasurers to stand because Sam is spending second semester in Paris, leaving Tom as the lone treasurer. Both of us are second year students as well as peer mentors. Outside of treasuring, we enjoy long walks on the beach and watching rom coms together.

Eloise Davis - Social Secretary

As the Social Secretary of the society it’s my role to organise various events throughout the year for everyone to enjoy. Highlights of the PPE social calendar include the annual Curry, Christmas Cocktails and the End of Year Ball. This year I’ll be looking to widen our social horizons by forming PPE sports teams and organising an end of year sports day. These events offer the perfect opportunity to develop great friendships away from the lecture theatre and across all three years. My aim is to get everyone as involved as possible in our socials, so do come along as socials really are at the heart of the PPE society. I’m eager to hear everyone’s ideas for future socials so feel free to share these with me!

Moses Seitler - Communications and Social Media Officer

Hello, my name is Moses and I’m your Communications and Social Media Officer this year. It is my responsibility to maintain and improve the incredibly sparkly PPE society website. If you have any photos or write-up’s of PPE events you want to appear on the site, just let me know. I also manage our presence on social media – the PPE society prides itself on being diverse but also close- knit, so keep in the loop by following @uomppe on Twitter and Instagram. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to contribute to content and to help raise the profile of the society. Get in touch!

Claudia Gibbard - Engagement Officer

In its first year of existence, I will take the role of Engagement Officer for the Society. It' s my goal to facilitate academic events that can inspire and help members in between deadlines and all-nighters. I will be organising events with speakers including public figures of interest such as politicians, councillors, journalists, academics, charity representatives and business people, all with the purpose making your year academically more exciting. If you think you can raise the profile of the PPE society by helping to get big name speakers in, let me know! I will also be hosting society well-being events as well as academic and career workshops, in order to give you an early start on writing your CV, cover letters and LinkedIn profile for the 2017 summer’s internship applications. We

Aisha Thakker - Fundraising Officer & Peer Mentor Co-ordinator

Hi, I'm Aisha. I will be responsible for the society’s charity side – so you’ll see me pushing raffle tickets at socials or pressing for PPE teams in sporting events and competitions throughout the year. You’ll be choosing the charity we support, and I’ll be making sure that it has plenty of visibility within the society so we can raise as much money and awareness as possible. I welcome any ideas you might have, so please do get in touch. Alongside Zohaib and Eloise, I will also be co-ordinating the peer mentor scheme. We’ll be putting first years in groups with 2nd or 3rd year mentors who will help provide advice and support while you settle in at Manchester.

Eloise Peck - Peer Mentor Co-ordinator

Hi, my name is Eloise and along with Aisha and Zohaib I will be a Student Co-ordinator for the mentoring scheme. I will be oversee the scheme and make sure that all first years are integrated into mentoring groups with the second and third years. The mentoring scheme is a great way for PPE students to get to know other PPE students across different year groups. Course mentors will be able to provide support and give advice- whether on module choices or general information about the University and student life. Let us know if you have any questions!

Zohaib Sadiq - Peer Mentor Co-ordinator

My name’s Zohaib and I’ll be a Student Co- ordinator for the PPE mentoring scheme this year. I’ll be working alongside Aisha and Eloise to ensure the smooth running of the scheme. The scheme involves allocating you guys into mentor groups; each group will be there to support you in your transition to University life in Manchester, both in an academic and a social respect. I look forward to meeting you all at our first social in September.
